GAIN is a gain block that with an input transformer can be used as a mic pre or unbalanced in as a makeup amp. It only needs a 48vdc power rail to run. From this, it supplies the opamp with +/-12vdc to +/-24vdc set by a trimpot, as well as supplying 48v for phantom power. Opamp voltage is set by one trimpot. The PCB can take several normal dual DIP8 opamps or DOA discrete 1.1" opamps with standard 990 / 2520 pinout. This kit is even easier to build as no power supply has to be built if using our prebuilt external 48v 25W & 40W SMPS which can run up to 8 or more GAIN kits and runs on any mains voltage in the world.

Opamps the GAIN PCB can take basically any Dual DIP8 and 2520/990 pinout DOA opamp directly. Like below

  • JLM99v, Twenty 5 Twenty, 990A+, Flick SMD, Hybrid SMD, 990C, 992, 993. (Set trimpot to 48v (+/-24vdc).
  • NE5532A, OPA2134 (Set trimpot to 36v (+/-18vdc).
  • 2520, 1731, LM833 (Set trimpot to 32v (+/-16vdc).

GAIN PCB Size 50mm (2") x 50mm (2")

Awesome! The easiest way to make a fantastic "Franken-Pre"!

This kit made it incredibly quick and easy to assemble a solid microphone preamp from spare parts. I have a lot of vintage transformers lying around that don't fit any current PCB mount footprints. GAIN made it simple to test a few and wire up the winner, a big funky ADC. Next add a discrete opamp, I used a Big FET Bloke (see GroupDIY). I chose to have the options of both a clean Jensen output transformer and a gritty Opamp Labs output transformer. Two flavors! The input circuitry is up to you as far as how full featured you want it to be - I did a polarity (aka Phase) switch and Phantom power and that's all I need. Using the "Tiny Internal 48v 15w 315mA SMPS" that JLM sells made wiring in power a breeze. This kit is a tweaker's delight and yields a cost-effective preamp without compromise. I want more!
