Thanks Joe. It was one of the solder joints on the relay.
Is there a schematic for the PEQ500A?

Re: PEQ500A kit BUILD THREAD
Just finished up a pair of these bad boys, set the levels with the trim pot and ran some music through them to make sure everything was working. I think I am in business! I think When I get a chance I think will run some tests with Plugin Doctor just to make sure there are not issues I am missing. Is it normal to have a very slight coloring of the sound even when the EQs are in bypass?
Thanks for the great kit Joe!

I prefer not to hand out the schematic but will help fault find always.

Yes normal for whole eq circuit and audio path to be in circuit, as eq off just acts like all cut and boost controls turned back to flat. The only time the EQ is fully bypassed is when rack is powered down and hard bypass relay links the in and out.
Plugin doctor is great for checking match but make sure you turn plugin doctors gain in the top right down so peak fits on screen or it does some strange stuff. Also it gets the low end roll off wrong as it has an issue with phase roll and frequency response in the low end. Also I find its left and right have different issues so low roll off always look mismatched between channels when they are not on my AP test.

Re: PEQ500A kit BUILD THREAD
I could not tell from the pics on the instructions for the Switch PCB which colour switch went in which position only until after I soldered them both in. One in is a two way switch for Eq in (silver legs) and the other the 3 way switch (gold legs) for the hi cut. Unfortunately now I can't seem to remove the switches no matter what I try. Any suggestions?
Edit:: gaahh I see the 2 pos and 3 pos direction right on the pcb layout now of my second unit! Anyhow any ideas on removing these pesky switches.. thanks again

You can cheat by cutting the back 3 legs flush to the top of the pcb and then heating the front 2 small pads together and pulling the switch gently. Then heat the front 2 pads and slide the swapped switches in while continuing heating the front pads. When swapped and sitting flush on pcb solder the back 3 switch legs on the top of the pcb.
If you do not think you can get them off without damaging the pcb we can change them here if you ship the pcb to us but it will cost you the shipping.

Re: PEQ500A kit BUILD THREAD
We remove switches with a Goot desolder sucker and soldering iron set to about 350 - 380 degrees. Do the 3 large pads at the back first as they clear well. If you fail to clear, fill the hole with fresh solder and heat for 3 or 4 seconds with sucker sitting on top and hit trigger. Then use the solder tip across the 2 front smaller pads while pulling gently on the switch upwards away from the pcb.paullambert100 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 30, 2023 3:04 pmI could not tell from the pics on the instructions for the Switch PCB which colour switch went in which position only until after I soldered them both in. Re: PEQ500A kit BUILD THREAD
I’m a bit confused about the trimpot.. am I supposed to turn the rack on, switch the EQ to On, then disconnect power from the rack?
Then once it’s in in Hard Relay mode I switch on the rack, and then switch off the eq to turn the trimpot?
I’m afraid of disconnecting power while the eq is on..

Re: PEQ500A kit BUILD THREAD
You just need to note the output level @ 1khz when the peq500A has no power so is in hard bypass. Then power PEQ500A in eq off or eq on with all pots CCW and set the same output level with trimpotJLMfan wrote: ↑Fri Jul 19, 2024 6:58 pmI’m a bit confused about the trimpot.. am I supposed to turn the rack on, switch the EQ to On, then disconnect power from the rack?

Re: PEQ500A kit BUILD THREAD
Hello all,
I soldered the switches in the wrong spot…didn’t realize one was a 2 pos and 3 pos.
So in my removal of them…. The little round contracts that are attached to the pcb came off during the process.
Will I need a new pcb?

Send me some large clear in focus top and bottom photos of the pcb so I can see and work out the best way.
Always best to email me before you attempt to remove parts so I can best advice how to do it without damaging the PCB.

Re: PEQ500A kit BUILD THREAD
Haha, I also soldered the switches in the wrong spot on my first unit but after some struggle, manage to do it proper. The units seem to work great, I need to spend more time with them. But the problem I have now is the orange led doesn't work. I tried applying heat to the 2 solder joints with no luck. Is it possible to get a bad led? Thanks

Is the led the correct way around. You can see inside the led and the large cup piece inside is the cathode which leg should be at the front edge of the pcb.
Also is the push switch on the Q control pot clicking ok?

Re: PEQ500A kit BUILD THREAD
Ok first have you soldered 2 of the rectangle solder pads together behind the Q / BW pot so the switch is connected to the led and relay? The pads are so you can swap to the second switch contact if the first switch contact ever fails.George wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 12:59 amHaha, I also soldered the switches in the wrong spot on my first unit but after some struggle, manage to do it proper. Re: PEQ500A kit BUILD THREAD
Greetings from Switzerland!
Thanks to my groovy tape doctor (aka audio tech) i'm sitting here listening to my first recording with the lovingly assembled PEQ500A applied on vocals/12 string guitar. What a pleasure, this baby sounds simply gorgeous and turns my already fabulous NoHype Audio LRM 2B ribbon mic into something akin to an M49 hi class sound > bringing out the natural glory... just what i hoped for.
The kit arrived so swift i could hardly believe it and hadn't even registered with this forum by the time i knocked on my tech's door on Sunday morning. Luckily a good soul down under saw my plea and quickly provided us with access while the tech figured out most as he went along; the photos in the attachments very very helpful though with some details.
All feels reassuringly solid and thankfully no annoying noises when switching on an off etc. So to me a 100 lucky strike...
Many thanks to Joe and JLM team, you rock!
Cheers and greetings -
Andreas
Ps, i got a 2nd hand JLM LA500 years ago and that's another easy to love device that has been in constant use with no probs
