LA500A issue after move

Post by dneilsen »

I recently relocated my studio.
In the move my entire 19" rack (which is on wheel) was moved as a complete unit.

Unfortunately after the move one of my LA500's is not working correctly.
(Was working perfectly before the move)

What is working:
- The threshhold control seems to work and the gain meter responds accordingly
- Pulling the threshold control will engage the slow mode (and light will light)
- Pulling the makeup control will engage the link light

What is not working
- Background light on the meter
- Makeup gain (No gain is applied to the signal)

What I have already tried:
- Other slots in my 500 series rack
- Disconnecting and reconnecting ribbon cables
- Looking for obviously damaged components

Can someone point me in the right direction as to where to start finding the issue?
I have some basic electronics knowledge and can certainly follow directions but not really sure where to start looking for the issue

Link to short 15sec vid showing the issue. (The lead vocal is going through the LA500 in the recording)

Thank you in advance for anyone that can help point me in the right direction

If the meter led doesn’t light the bypass relay will not operate so you will be in hard bypass permanently.

The meter soldering on your modules looks very messy. If the outside meter 2 led tabs have broken away this will be the problem. If tabs are a bit short to the pcb then add a cut off component leg to help join them with better strength

If they are still joined the meter led could have failed. To prove this solder a wire link between the outside meter led tabs to short out the led and the comp should work but not have a meter light.

Thanks joe
All of the soldering looks firm and connected.
Ill try shorting the outside meter legs as suggested and see if that works.
Ill report back either way.

Hi Joe
Just confirming that shorting the meter has returned normal operation to the unit (except for the light in the meter)
Have ordered a replacement from your site. Should be an easy fix.
Thanks for the help
