Trimpot fried on home made AC/DC

Hello all,
based on Joe's schematic (here; http://www.jlmaudio.com/ACDCv4%20Schematic.pdf) I made my own AC/DC PSU but without the NEG rail. Using a 24VAC transformer. Attached schematic. Meter reads 24VDC and ~68VDC on the tripler. If I try to wind down the voltage on the 317, I fry the pot. I'm using a 3296 KT, 28 turn 5k (0.5W) is that a problem? Any suggestions.
