Regurgitator kit Build Thread
REGURGITATOR
Regurgitator PCB can convert any balanced or unbalanced signal in to balanced or unbalanced signal out with trim pot control from -10db loss to +18db gain.
PCB comes as 8 x V groove snapable PCBs in one with side power connections already joined between the 8 PCB's.
Side power connections still line up when PCB sections are rotated 180 degrees. We can sell the PCBs still joined in 1 to 8 multiples.
Regurgitator 8PAK PCB. Size 8" (203.2mm) x 2.3" (58.42mm)
8PAK is V Grooved on top side and only needs 2 or 3 scores with a sharp utility knife
against a straight edge on the underside to cut the joining power rail tracks and
groove the PCB join so they seperate cleanly by bending the PCB section upwards.
XLR spacing is 1" (25.4mm) between joined PCB's
Regurgitator PCB. Size 1" (25.4mm) x 2.3" (58.42mm)

Rob's test figures using a 5532 on +/-18V rail
Max balanced output is +29dBu or +26dBm
Noise when trimmed for unity gain is -93dBu unweighted ( this is on the bench with no case and there is a small amount of 50Hz being picked up )
Noise when trimmed for +18dB gain is -73dBu unweighted ( as above )
Noise when trimmed for -10dB gain is -102dBu ( this is the limit of my analyser )
Distortion at unity gain and +10dBu out is 0.002% ( this is the limit of my analyser )
CMRR is -70dBu at unity gain of test unit with normal 1% resistors.
Input Z balanced is 15K and unbalanced is exactly 7.5K looking into either the hot or cold leg.
So this achieves the aim of high CMRR and impedance balanced input. Unlike a normal diff amp where the input Z is different into each leg.

1 x 3 way terminal block or Male XLR or Female XLR
1 x NE5532AP or OPA2604AP or None
2 x 1watt zener diodes which are only needed in special setups and not included in the kit.
Extra 100nF decoupling caps can be mounted in the ZD1 & ZD2 positions if zeners are not used.
If fitting zeners the 2 x 10R may need to change value depending on zener diode voltage and +/-V.

I will be using OPA2604 .Should I also run the rails at +- 18v or bump up to +- 24 v(raise elec cap volts to 50)
Also anything else I should know about using this circuit with the OPA2604?

Can the variable gain range be changed to a more full range selection, such as a swap from 5K to 20 or 25K value? If the trim pot is lifted entirely via a switch, will the output of the circuit be 0dB?

+/-24v is good with the OPA2604AP. Caps still only need to be 25v types. The kits have 35v electros in thembOTL wrote:Joe

If turning the trim pot into a front panel control pot the pot will need to be like most gain pots a reverse log function like our dual 10k rev log pot wires in parellel to make a 5k rev log pot.
Level will drop to -12.5dB with the trim pot open circuit from -10dB with trim pot at 5k so changing to a large pot value will not help.If the trim pot is lifted entirely via a switch, will the output of the circuit be 0dB?
I am working on a html sheetsheet using a formula Rob sent me so this can be more easily calculated by anyone.

Which Male XLR or Female XLRs fit the PCB? I have some NC3FD-H and NC3MD-H but it doesn't look like they will fit.

I like DI's to have a 1Meg input impedance so they do not load the instrument at all. So the input impedance is a bit low in the Regurgitaor. The PCB takes Neutrik A series XLR's. NC3MAH and NC3FAH. Also normal D series solder XLR's can push on each end and be soldered direct to the PCB but will need all the PCB's seperated as they will need to be 27mm appart where as the A series and PCB spacing is 25.4mm (1")

I'm confused about the parts list above. I ordered the parts listed and ended up with half the 15k resistors that I needed to fully populate the boards (8 pak). I'm assuming (as per the pics) that the boards should be fully stuffed for all configurations.
Are there any differences besides the connectors for stuffing the boards for bal > unbal vs. unbal > bal ?

The parts in the kit should be enough to fully populate the PCB. If not this batch of kits has been wrongly packed. Let me know how many 15k you are missing and I will get it shipped ASAP or if you have sourced the 15k locally let me know the cost. OK I see you order your owns part and yes there was typo of 3 x 15k which should have been 6 x 15k and 3 x 1k8 should be 4 x 1k8. Sorry. Parts list now fixed.

Hi Joe, ever thought of making a kit active mic splitter? Maybe the regurgitator could be the basis for it?
I don't know if there's a lot of call for one, or if people prefer passive splits, bit it seems the reason a lot of people use passives
is because of the cost involved to buy actives.
Just a thought, as I'm currently building a 16 way passive but would have loved a diy active alternative.
