dINgO Pup kit BUILD THREAD

The JLM Compact Universal IO PCB known as dINgO Pup shown below can be used as a balanced in to unbalanced out and unbalanced in to balanced out with gain at the same time. Runs on +/-12v to 24v rails. Can have terminals for in and out or Neutrik Series A PCB connectors direct to the PCB. Can be just use to balance any unbalanced equipment in and out.

so what is the main difference between this and the dingo? DOA of course but will it still drive an output transformer?

and where is the passive EQ circuit and where do I buy that?

The four most significant differences between the DInGo and the PUP are that the PUP -
(1) has no VCA
(2) has no capacity for the 99V/Hybrid/550c type discrete opamps
(3) has no onboard relay for hard-bypass of the external signal loop and
(4) uses the opamps to electrically balance and isolate the signal with a 6db gain, effectively eliminating the technical need for a transformer.

The sonic difference (and I'm guessing here) would be that the PUP is very neutral and that's how it is. The DInGo would allow more sonic variation for "character" by using the discrete opamps - it could be built to be anything from transparent to sticky goo.

BOTH the DInGo and PUP replace transformer in/outs, and while you can add a transformer to the DInGo, you do not need to do so. You would add one perhaps for the added 6db gain of a 1:2 output tranny when using the 99V type of opamp in the output socket.

We're all waiting for the EQ kit, but I'm sort of scared - I built my own version of a 1073 type EQ (LF bell, MF bell, HF and HPF shelf) and I just know it will sound crap compared to Joe's. I don't want to know

You can wire a 1:1 output transformer in by leaving out the 2 x 100uF output caps and wiring to there but the unit is always electronic balanced out so no real point in doing so.

Otherwise what Chris says is correct.

Change R6 to 1meg
Change R8 to 10k reverse log pot

and on the Re*amp side:
Adding an On/Off ground lift switch to the cold side of the unbalanced out
Add 1k log pot and 47k resistor in series to hot side of unbalanced out

Sound right?

As a side note: I'm planning to build a few of these to interface my tape delays as well as a pair to help interface guitar pedals (hence the re*amp setup). Would it be to my advantage at all to use this re*amp scheme when going to the delays, or do you imagine just balancing them would have a similar effect? Thanks so much.

Yes that will work perfect. Best to use OPA2604AP for the DI output opamp as it will have less DC offset with a 1Meg input resistor due to its Fet input stage.

Yes but with the tape delays I would use a 1k trim pot without the 47k to set the input level and just use a trim pot for R8 to remake up the gain to unity again. But if you want them to all be multitask then the reamp setup will work for all.

Each will use 20 - 30mA at idle to 40mA - 100mA swinging full output (depending on voltage rails, if zeners are fitted and output load)

You can do all of the above with 2 dingo pups

but with one dingo pup you can make 2 balanced in to unbalanced out if you change a couple of resistors and use JLMIO port

but not 2 unbalanced to balanced out.

(actually, reading your above response, I believe that you are saying that. If I purchase this, I assume you could send me a note showing the technical bits.)

Yes simple to do and you do not need to cut any tracks BUT it would be nicer and easier done with 2 x Regurgitator kits as that is what they are made for and both channels have the exact same signal path.
