Valve Preamp & Compressor Kits- AT Interview

Post by Mully »

Ok ok.... so if you didn't know, Joe is interviewed by Brad Watts on the Audio Technology website and mentions an upcoming valve preamp kit(!) plus some compressors he's working on for release....

Anyone know any more about these???

Did he mention the JLM 24:8 bus mixing console in the interview? Or shouldn't I be talking about that yet....

No wait, that was like in my dreams, right?

(The MAC thread has some info on the new compressors, BTW - opto and fet in 500 series format)

Here is the AT Interview on youtube. Hopefully it makes some sense as it was done just before I jumpered on a plane after 3 days and nights of talking way to much tech talk and no sleep.

My relaxed state was from Andy's comfy couch and complete exhaustion. Yes there is a Baby Animal Tube kit coming. And it does run on 48v.

Hey Chris thanks for the reference to the MAC thread. Will go take another looksee.
"Yes there is a Baby Animal Tube kit coming. And it does run on 48v.
THIS is something I will be very keen to see a release for plus the compressors you mention in that interview Joe. Quite keen.

I'm prepared to hold off on doing an LA2a build if you've got something coming out soon. Any rough dates at all for the valve pre and the new compressor(s)?

Yours keenly,
Me

O rly? Sounds like the perfect way to round off my BA unit - I'm planning on buying the last of my four channels later this year as is.

I assume its the same form factor as the others? As what valve(s) will be used (please say 12AU7, please say 12AU7, I have a bunch of old ones hanging around here not getting any love).

So does anyone know much about the 'new' kits on the drawing board?

I wanna pull the trigger on a LA2A kit but reckon Joe's may be a better option (will sound excellent, local, good support etc).

Anyone here built an LA2A style comp?

The compressors mentioned are 500 series final products not kits. Fet comp (1176 style), Opto comp (LA3A like MAC), MU comp. Fet comp will be the first out. BUT read below.

Yes same BA PCB format. The BA Tube runs 2 x 408A tube gain stages or 2 x fet gain stages with fet unity gain high current output stage. The 2 tubes have 20v 50mA filaments which run in series from the 48v rail as well.

Ok Chris yes. The PCB isn't finished yet as I am experimenting with a daughter board for the tubes that sits on either side of the main BA PCB on rubber shock mounts.
So does anyone know much about the 'new' kits on the drawing board?
Will not have pricing until the BA Tube PCB is finalised. Will have the MONO mic pre kits up on the web store in two weeks when the screenprinted cases arrive back.

The BA Tube is like the LA2A amp stage so I have been thinking of putting a socket on its PCB for plugging a MAC like side chain into to make the BA Tube into a mic pre with opto comp. But we do already have the full MAC compressor kit which is like a pair of LA3A type comps.

Hey Joe (is that a song? ) thanks for the update.

This sounds interesting. Will keep an eye on the store for the new mono kit.

A valve BA with the MAC side chain sounds like something we'd all want. The full MAC kit looks tempting but I'm after a single channel at present... however, if there was a valve BA kit with MAC... weeeeeellll.... THAT could be just the ticket.

Will hang on for a bit longer methinks. Better keep in pre-production mode a bit longer!

JLM FanBoy out.

Hmm... I'd say he's a herbal tea drinker... can't be that clever drinking bourbon. :D

Anyway Mac, you've got a head start coz he's already named a compressor after you!

Cheers.
