Advice on parts for Neve 1271

Post by method1 »

Hi, I sent this question through to sales and didn't get a response, so maybe this is the more appropriate "forum"

I have 4 neve 1271 with the BA183AM cards populated and a gain pot for use as a mic pre.

They are not racked and I'm in need of some advice regarding what parts I will need to get them running.

I'm looking for a power supply, phantom power and if possible, DI input - and the correct pin configuration for connecting everything.

All 4 have the original amphenol plugs in the back.

However not being a tech and this being my first attempt at such, I need some advice regarding what I'd need to order.

You input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Joel

HI Joel

1271 is a unity gain buffer with 31267 line input step down transformer and 1272 is a 36dB line amp with 10468 mic input step up transformer.

To convert 1271 to mic pre you need to fully populate the NV preamp section of the BA183/BA283 card and rewire 31267 to step up (reverse wire) and rewire 1271 to match 1272.

Once working correctly as 1272 you can add our JLM Audio 1272 to 1290 module to make a real 1290 Neve type 75dB mic pre amp (1073 type mic pre). See link below
http://www.jlmaudio.com/shop/index.php? ... oductId=78

Our Power Plant Power supply is made to run 4 x Neve modules with super smooth +24v and also supply the +48v needed for phantom power so is perfect for running these 4 modules. See link below

Step by step info 1272 to 1290 info at link below

To add 48v, 20dB Pad and Phase switching use our Go Between kit cut into the input XLR cable and wire 48v to GO between kit. A Active 1Meg DI input can be added to this in seconds by plugging in our FETDI kit. See links below

Hi Joe

Thanks for the information. The modules have already had the 1272 conversion and I find the gain is more than enough for use with a modern LDC or even dynamic mic.
Are there any other benefits of the 1290 conversion besides the extra gain?

Will be ordering the requisite parts shortly.

Thanks

Joel

Sounds like there has been a gain resistor added as well to bring the overall gain up if it is working with dynamics and able to put out full level into a +18dBM pro A/D. As this usually requires about 45dB of gain.
The 1290 module increases the gain in steps so optimise's the signal to noise and adds the 2nd preamp stage used in the real 1073/1290 when doing more than 50dB of gain. With the 2 preamp stages in is where the real magic sound of this type of pre happens for me.
Will be ordering the requisite parts shortly.
OK cool :-)

Makes me wonder exactly what mod was done to these modules, they also have 2 gainstages, accessible by pushing the volume pot in.

Thanks for the info.

Sounds like they have done our 1272 simple mod at the link below
http://www.jlmaudio.com/JLM1272simplemod.pdf

This has 2 gain steps not 2 gain stages. As the 2nd gain stage requires a 2nd BA183NV card which will not fit in a 1272.

Our 1272 to 1290 kit has the 2nd gain stage and all switching on it.

Again, thanks for the clarification Joe.

Could you post another link to that PDF? It seems to just be one page that says "pdf" ?

Hi Joe,

I have 4 1271 modules, currently in original condition, I was wondering if I can a) rather than attempt to populate the BA283 card in the 1271, replace/suppliment with your BAx83NV card... is this an option?

Also can you give more details about the process of reversing of the input transformer or point me in the direction of somewhere that will explain this (i've had no joy googling)

Finally, do you happen to know what sub racking system would hold 8 1272/1271 modules in their upright position in a 19" rack in a similar way to how they sit in a console and with the ability to remove as per the original racking system.

Many thanks in advance

Richard
