INX5 BUILD THREAD

Post by Joe Malone »

INX5 PCB is a 51X & 500 series edge connector format version of our popular dINgO IN and Out interface PCB. Which had provide Balanced input to unbalance output buffer and at the same time a unbalanced input to Balanced output amplifier using either normal Dual DIP8 opamps or discrete amps with 2520,990 footprint.

INX5 + JLM GO between PLUS kit makes a 51X or 500 series Mic preamplifier (See LA500 & LA500A build threads on this forum)
INX5 + JLM MAC comp kit makes a 51X or 500 series opto compressor (See BA500 build thread on this forum)
These are the first two project we will be making full metal work for with more to follow.

I finished my first INX5 today, used here for a MAC with a nice Haufe transformer.

Serious output transformer. Excellent as always Holger.

Your original MAC kit with dingo PCB in 500 series was the inspiration for looking at ways to use the MAC PCB without changes for the LA500. :D 8)

I've decided to make a new front panel for my MAC 500. Custom painted green, looks a bit like an old Altec device

I can recommend to buy one of Joe's compressor kits.

Yesterday I had the chance to test Holger´s MAC500 and compare it to an original LA3A as well as two other 51x opto compressor kits (one of them still being in prototype state). To make it short, the MAC500 hands down beat the sh*t out of the competitors. I was totally floored. Even the LA3A sounded like a one trick pony. The 51x optocomp prototype was left totally behind, it certainly still needs a lot of tweaks in the sidechain. The other 51x opto (LAZpro FSC) has more controls than the MAC500 but acts a little picky on the source material. It seems to like dense material more than percussive signals - all of which is no problem to handle for the MAC500... with grace. The combination of ratio and sidechain HPF switch is the weapon to dial compression in a very musical an pleasing way in. Rave over, nuff said, going to order now. (please don´t tell my wife  )
Congrats, Joe, well done!!!

MAC500 Looks great Holger. I do like the Altec green look. :D
Great to see the 2, 3 and 4 pin terminal blocks fit the MAC pcb as I have ordered a couple of hundred of 2,3,4 wire types pre wired to add to our kits to make wiring easier.

Thanks for the great review Jens :D
You should have your LA500 kit arrive any day now 8)

A little update to my last review. I´ve used the LA500 on sax last weekend at a show which I frequently mix ( http://www.michaeljacksontributeshow.de/ ). Creamy, easy to dial in and versatile is what I´d call that comp. It was the best sound I had with that player for ages! I´m going to sell my other 500 series optos to get more LA500s for my siderack. That says all...

I'm working on a couple of Mac + INX5 with a Lundahl LL1539 (wired as 1:1) and a 2520 DOA clone on output...
I'm watching about the differences between the INX5 and the LA500...
- i see in the LA500 R4 in an half of R3 (as R6 is an half of R5), this means that the gain of the input stage is an half
- R13 is 470R instead 51R in the INX5
should i do those changes in my 2 INX5?
Do u think i still need the RV2 Gain?

tnx in advance

P.S. the pict is old, now i've substited the led (now wired to the VuMeter Led) with a switch...for the link!
