more gain less noise (for ribbon mics)

I just got some ribbon mics. (generic chinese alctron with lundahl transformers and grille reductions mods.)

they sound pretty good through my BA with OPA2604 (the 99v is a bit soft for them). just as well since the 2604 channels have more gain.

anyway. there is enough gain, but only just, and it gets hissy at the very highest settings.

what is the best way to get a better signal to noise ration in my BA's at high settings for ribbon mics?

does the signal to noise ratio actually worsen at the highest gain settings? it sounds to me like the noise comes up more than the signal for the last 4 clicks or so...
