4 Zone Amp Build - Heat Stress Testing

G'day, Just put the amp through its paces to ensure that it has adequate heat sinking.... this thing's got some jump :D For testing I configured the amp with all 8 channels bridged into 4 pairs, with each pair driving an 8ohm speaker. The heat sinking is as shown in previous posts, fans clipped onto...

Re: 8PAKAMP KIT BUILD THREAD

Not sure how smooth a transition from stereo to mono it will be as I think it would be a reverse log function. So may be lots of nothing and then sudden mono at the end. Also width will change when turning the level up or down. But if it is mainly a set and forget system it will be fine. Yes that s...

Re: 8PAKAMP KIT BUILD THREAD

Hi Joe, Looking good but mounting the LM3886 on a angle not such a good idea but it should work fine. I mustn't have explained it clearly, sorry. The chip package is flush with the PCB... no angle. The spring clip was to make sure that the face was flush and touching the PCB, rather than having it e...

4 Zone Amp Build Commenced - PCB Stuffed

Progress: LM3886 on board underside. Managed to get them nice and straight. IMG_0995.jpg I used a small spring clamp to hold the chips in place, which ensured that the upper surface of the package was flush with the PCB during soldering. Due to the gap formed between the chip and the PCB around the ...

4 Zone Amp Build Commenced - Internal Layout

Here is the proposed layout: IMG_0991.jpg Chips on the PCB underside, mounted to a piece of 75x35x9 unequal angle aluminium with two CPU coolers attached. Angle will attach firmly to the chassis, which may help with dissipation a little... though the thermal resistance across the powder coating will...

4 Zone Amp Build Commenced - Layout

Hi all, I thought I'd post my progress on the 8 channel, 4 zone amp. The input/volume network has been laid out, though I forgot to order the 4 SPST switches for the mono mixing :x I was going to mount these switches under the volume and source selection on the front of the chassis... though I could...

Re: 8PAKAMP KIT BUILD THREAD

Hi Joe, So I've learnt a lot about passive networks over the last few days. A small change in the design brief for this cafe amp has made me rethink the input/volume section that will proceed the power amps. Basically, the amp now needs 2 stereo inputs (say iPod and Radio), independently selectable ...

Re: 8PAKAMP KIT BUILD THREAD

Joe, many thanks. It's true what I read in the reviews.... you are very helpful and obliging, particularly towards someone who hasn't yet purchased a product of yours. I'm sold now! I was sure that I'd have to buffer the pots; so much so that I thought it was silly to post the question with my attac...

Re: 8PAKAMP KIT BUILD THREAD

Joe, thanks for the reply. This looks like the kit for the job... I'd make an 8 channel with 2 unused channels for future expansion of the system. As mentioned, I'll be summing the stereo input channels to mono and driving all amps with the same signal. This will be done passively with a stereo-to-m...

Re: 8PAKAMP KIT BUILD THREAD

Hi Joe, I'm looking to build a multi channel amp for a small cafe installation and just stumbled upon this kit. It will just be background music so all I need is low(ish) levels of clear sound. I wanted to check the LM3886's ability to drive longish cable runs... Do you think that a single channel w...
