Re: LA500A opto comp MAY 2021 BUILD THREAD 500/51X

This might be a dumb question, but why is the ratio switch a DPDT rather than a SPDT? It looks like it could have been done with a single pole.

Re: Go Between and Go Between Plus kit BUILD THREAD

Hi Joe,

I'm making a front panel for a 4-channel pre using Go-Betweens. I saw the drill description for the switch spacing on the kit page, but I don't see where it says what the hole size should be for the phantom LED bezel. I'm guessing around 4mm, but I want to be sure. Thanks!

Re: 1290 Build Thread

Hey Joe, Sorry for the delay. I was doing a bunch of tests. I think I have it figured out, but I want to run this by you. Here's what I observed: -On the right channel, both the PAD and Phase switched caused issues. Sometimes one would cut the signal, sometimes the other, and sometimes in combinatio...

Re: 1290 Build Thread

Hi Joe, A strange new problem has started happening. The right channel works fine normally (although there's more hum than I remember with the gain turned up high), but once I engage the PAD, there is a lot of crackling and distortion, and when I disengage the PAD, the signal is gone entirely. The o...

Re: 1290 Build Thread

[They have to be 2SK170-BL and no matching needed. Available on our webshop at link below if you get stuck. https://www.jlmaudio.com/shop/2sk170-fet.html Thanks, I managed to track some down locally, and replacing them did the trick. The two channels match and sound good now! Just for future refere...

Re: 1290 Build Thread

Sounds good. What's the part # (I can't quite make it out because they're mounted face to face)? Also, do they need to be matched? I might have some in my parts bins, otherwise I'm sure I can find some locally.

Re: 1290 Build Thread

Need to know if these are FETDI or OPAMPDI kits. But if FETDI sounds like 1 of the fets is damaged. Usually this will discolour a couple of resistors as well. Replacing the 2 fets and any damaged resistors will usually return the DI to 100%. First test to do is to swap the DI's between the 2 x 1290...

Re: 1290 Build Thread

Hey Joe, I'm seeing some strange behavior with one of the DIs on my 1290. I figured I would run it by you so see if it sounds familiar before I pull it out of the rack and put it on the bench. When I first plug something into the left channel's DI, it seems to behave properly for about 5-10 seconds,...

Re: Valve Mic Pre comp kit wish list & discussion

These look awesome. What's the story with the toroidal OT's you're using in the prototypes? If you're looking for other ideas for tube circuits, it would be great to see another option for a V72-style preamp, or a take on the original Putnam 610. I'm also very interested in a stereo Altec/RS Mu comp...

Re: 1290 Build Thread

FYI, the cap arrive and I installed it - no more oscillation at high gain! Thanks again for all the help. :D

Re: 1290 Build Thread

If you are testing with nothing plugged into the input at 75dB of gain you can get oscillation just between the in and out bleed. Also you should twist the ribbon cable into a tight cylinder and then replug it in to the XLRIO header. Also keep ribbon and the output wires from transformer to the out...

Re: 1290 Build Thread

Just finished getting it all together and did initial testing. Everything is perfect aside from the channel with the missing cap oscillating at high gain levels (pad engaged, full gain, full fader). Should that be remedied once I add the missing cap, or did I screw something up? Thanks!

Re: 1290 Build Thread

Thanks for the answers!

Attached is a picture of all four BAX83NV's (sorry for the quality - bad lighting). As you can see, the top left one is missing the cap at the right edge of the board.

Re: 1290 Build Thread

Hi Joe, Two quick questions: -I noticed one of the BAX83VN's I received is missing the 680pF polystyrene cap to the right of the 470uF. Will that be an issue? I'm not sure if it was an accidental omission or not. -I'm using Ed Anderson's EA-10468 transformers (http://www.hairballaudio.com/catalog/pa...
